If standing in line on Black Friday with crowds of holiday shoppers isn’t your idea of a workout, here are some options for working off the calories before and after your Thanksgiving meal.
On the day before Thanksgiving, get in a Pre-Turkey Hill Climb at Dirt Farm Brewing. Park at the top of the hill and get your steps in before enjoying cider doughnuts and adult libations including beer-mosas and beer Bloody Marys from 10:00-11:30 a.m. on Nov. 27. Pedestrians only, no bikes are allowed. For details, go to dirtfarmbrewing.com/event/pre-turkey-hill-climb/ or call (540) 554-2337.
On Thanksgiving morning, walk, jog or run in one of the area’s morning races. The Ashburn Farm 10K/5K and 2K Fun Run, organized by Crossroads United Methodist Church, features more than 2,000 participants run the 10K or 5K, or walk the 2K Fun Run. You can register online until 4 p.m. Tuesday Nov. 26; paper registrations can be dropped at the church until 3 p.m. that day. You can register on the day of the race from 6:45-8:00 a.m. if space is available. 10K begins the races, with a start time of 8:15 a.m. For more details and to register, go to ashburnfarm10k.com.
On Friday Nov. 29, bypass the retail centers and head to the country to participate in 868 Estate Vineyards’ annual “Walk Off Your Wobble” between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. It’s a short and easy hike to the top of the hill and as a reward for your efforts, get a complimentary box of house-made chocolate truffles. While you’re at it, grab yourself with a glass of wine or have lunch at their sister restaurant onsite, Grandale Vintner’s Restaurant. For more info go to 868estatevineyards.com/events-3-2/.
