Keller Williams just celebrated his 49thbirthday, but the jam band icon shows few signs of slowing down after 30 years of playing festivals, barrooms and music halls.

Veterans of Loudoun’s music scene may recall the Fredericksburg native’s 2008 performance as part of the Loudoun Summer Music Fest concert series that was held in Belmont. On Saturday night, the multi-instrumentalist returns to perform his signature looping techniques on Loudoun’s biggest stage at the Tally Ho Theater in Leesburg.

The show comes just before a quick jaunt to St. Thomas for a pair of warm-weather shows and then a cross-country trek in March performing Tom Petty songs bluegrass-style with the HillBenders, as Pettygrass. Also, among his many side projects are explorations of the Grateful Dead—one in bluegrass and another in gospel.

After earning a theater degree from Virginia Wesleyan College, Williams’ musical aspirations led him to Colorado, where developed his looping skills that allowed him to create a full-band sound with a brand of guitar, bass, keyboards and drumsduring his frequent restaurant gigs.

Since 1994, he has released more than 20 albums that vary from rock to jazz to funk to bluegrass, each with a one-word title. His most recent album, Sans, is his first instrumental recording. He’s also played, recorded and toured with a roster of his musical heroes, includingThe String Cheese Incident; the Grateful Dead’s Bob Weir, Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart; banjo master Béla Fleck; bass great Victor Wooten; and American musician/poet Michael Franti.

Known for his improvisational approach in his live performances, no two shows are alike. And that’s what concertgoers should expect to see Saturday night—something a little different from the last show for Keller Williams veterans and something entirely new for those who haven’t experienced his trademark version of Acoustic Dance Music.
